About The Edinburgh Waterfront

The Edinburgh Waterfront is one of the most significant waterfront regeneration projects in Europe.

Forth Ports PLC started regeneration activity on the waterfront in the 1980s, leading in the 1990s to the opening of the Malmaison Hotel, the development of the Scottish Government building, Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre and waterfront housing at Rennies Isle.

By 2001, Western Harbour and Granton Harbour emerged as significant development sites and were granted outline planning permission in 2002 and 2003 respectively. Since receiving planning permission, a variety of national and local housing developers have committed to the construction of almost 1,500 homes. In addition, these new developments will include new local amenities such as shops, a school and leisure facilities.  The latest planning application is to establish the framework for the redevelopment of Leith Docks, a 144 hectare brownfield site.

To date, Forth Ports PLC has invested over £100million in the regeneration process which underlines the company’s long term commitment to the waterfront area of the city. The combined plans feature a superb mixture of residential, commercial, leisure and retail space that covers 450 acres of land and over 2 miles of shoreline with the most recent planning application laying the foundations for the next 30 years of development in Edinburgh.
